Box Kickers

The great thing about the “club” that produces these Box Kickers is that they’re all from different generations. Azed is the oldest member (born in the 60s), Richard’s in the middle (born in the 70s) and Jay is the youngest (born in the 80s).  The age difference leads to an interesting, if not always successful, mix of tracks.  Which explains why Led Zeppelin may be next to The Red House Painters, or Hugo Montenegro next to Public Enemy. The whole idea of the “club” is to come prepared with enough music so that selections can be “improvised” based on what the last person played. So while you are listening, you are also scrambling to find your next track. This gives Box Kickers an added dimension, seeing how the previous track influenced the following one.

The whole thing is sort of like doing the seating arrangement at a fantasy musician’s formal dinner. A giant formally elegant affair, where The Meter’s would be asking Steve Reich to pass the salt (…or the peas??) and is it a good idea to seat ELO right next to Tomita, and would Paul McCartney and Wings do well seated next to Sleater-Kinney? And just like at a formal dinner, who is seated next to who largely determines the success of the whole event. Does this person next that person create sparks and generate an exciting dialogue? Or do they sit there awkwardly straining to make a connection?

And what of these fellas who curate this buffet for the ears… (what?). Why did Richard choose to play opera at one point? Why does Azed always look for an opportunity to play The Little River Band? Why does Jay always smoke so much Meth and then cry like a little girl recounting the jeers and taunts of his childhood among the Amish? Like a twisted psycho-social experiment, Box Kickers gives us access into the minds of these uber music nerds and, inspired by the famous Milgram Experiment, Azed often considers adding electric shocks as punishment for choices he deems ‘inappropriate’.
